Role Overview:

Choppies Supermarkets is seeking an attentive, energetic, and quality-driven Fruit and Veg Assistant to handle our fresh produce section at the Makeni Bonaventure branch in Lusaka. The primary goal is to provide fresh, high-quality produce and excellent customer service.

Key Responsibilities:

• Set up fresh, attractive, and colorful fruit and vegetable displays to encourage customer purchases.
• Ensure all fresh produce is correctly priced, weighed, barcoded, and labeled clearly.
• Conduct daily physical stock counts and report shortages or excess stock promptly.
• Inspect produce regularly, remove spoiled items responsibly, and maintain accurate records of wastage.
• Assist in receiving fresh farm deliveries and verifying quality, weight, and freshness against supplier invoices.
• Help prepare special promotional displays for seasonal fruits and vegetables.
• Provide customers with helpful advice on produce storage, preparation, and nutritional value.
• Follow workplace safety rules strictly when handling crates, knives, and produce washing/cleaning equipment.
• Maintain detailed logs of stock rotation (FIFO), temperature logs, and rigorous cleaning schedules.
• Support colleagues in other fresh food departments when needed.

Education & Experience:

• High school diploma (Full Grade 12 Certificate) or equivalent.
• Food handlers’ certification & food production certification.
• 1–2 years of proven experience in fresh fruit and vegetable production or supermarket produce handling.
• Basic knowledge in fresh food handling, sorting, and preparation.
• Good communication and problem-solving skills.
• Physical fitness, agility, and candidate should be medically fit.

Skills, Abilities & Requirements:

• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced retail supermarket environment.
• Must be able to stay calm, focused, and detail-oriented under pressure.
• Strong interpersonal and customer care skills.
• Supervisory skills — ability to train colleagues to uphold uncompromising service delivery.
• Physical Exam Required: Medical Report & Police Clearance.
