We’re hiring for  ESCA Phenotyping Lead

As ESCA Phenotyping Lead you will be responsible for designing, planning and conducting comprehensive accurate field testing of Corteva maize germplasm in East and South-Central Africa (ESCA) with specific focus in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia. The position will drive phenotyping excellence for ESCA and ensure safe, effective, and efficient execution of phenotyping experiments that will generate high quality data for use in product development and advancement decisions. The position will be based in Lusaka, Zambia and will require ability to work effectively in a dynamic, multidisciplinary setting with regional and global interactions with Seed Product Development teams, Evaluation Zone Leads, Research Scientists, Product Managers, Agronomy teams and will involve the leadership of a team of Research Associates and Senior Research Associates with full accountability for their areas of responsibility. Success in the position will depend on ability to effectively execute the ESCA phenotyping blueprint, manage testing budget and support the testing of leveraged products in other ESCA markets. This role will be a critical driver of technology deployment across ESCA.

You Will Be Part of Growing Team

The Seed Product Development team is responsible for designing, developing and executing the Corteva Agriscience™ research programs which advance genetic gain and develop seed products to bring to market. The team you will be working in supports the East and South-Central African Business Unit.

Your Challenge:

  • Plan and execute ESCA testing targets through deployment of high-quality experiments in ESCA; critical coordination with ESCA Evaluation Zone Leads, Scientists, Senior Research Associates, Research Associates and Agronomists in site selection, planting, crop management, data collection, data analysis and report preparation and presentation.
  • Drive training and mentoring of Seed Product Development employees in phenotyping excellence that generates data of very high quality that will be used in product development and advancement decisions for ESCA.
  • The position will part of the ESCA leadership team and will effectively contribute to the smooth running of ESCA research activities and goals including recruiting, hiring, and managing effective performance.
  • Leverage best practices for phenotyping excellence used in other regions of the world and adapt these practices to meet our needs in ESCA.
  • Drive mechanization and technology deployment to enhance accuracy, quality and timely delivery of data targets. This requires critical planning and coordination with RESTS for Africa, Evaluation Zone Leads, Africa Logistic Lead and Scientists for ESCA.
  • Manage and prioritize resources required for successful execution of testing targets for ESCA and ensure that all the operations remain within budget.
  • Responsible for spearheading safety of phenotyping employees for ESCA and maintaining high ethical standards.

Key Stakeholders and Interactions:

Seed Product Development Lead and supporting teams, Africa Logistic Lead, Evaluation Zone Leads, Research Scientists, Product Managers, Agronomy teams and will involve the leadership of a team of Research Associates and Senior Research Associates with full accountability for their areas of responsibility. Frequent interaction and collaboration with Seed Operations teams and Local Business teams will be critical to success.

Qualifications

 

To Grow What Matters, You Will Need

  • PhD or MSc in Agronomy, Plant Breeding or related field. Three years or more of field research experience is highly preferred (with Ph D) and 5 years or more of field research experience in required for candidates with MSc.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and applied research experience in plant genetics and plant agronomy and strong aptitude for the management, analysis and publication of large data sets.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and a proven ability to work well in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual team environment.
  • Strong self-motivation with leadership capabilities to motivate others, initiate projects, make decisions and solve problems.
  • Excellent personal interaction skills required for effectively developing strong internal and external working relationships with a diverse group of people.
  • Understanding of small plot research techniques leading to high quality data is essential.
  • Excellent computer, data management, statistical analysis, and data presentation skills are essential.
  • Understanding of product needs for East, Southern and Central African maize markets.
