ELECTRICAL TECHNICIAN
The Electrical Technician maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, and optimizes solar-powered pumping systems and electrical infrastructure across the portfolio of solar-powered piped water systems, ensuring reliable, safe, and efficient operation in compliance with standards. The role supports preventive and corrective electrical maintenance, renewable energy system optimization, and integration with the centralized Remote Monitoring Unit (RMU) platform to sustain long-term water and sanitation service delivery.
Reporting to: Civil Engineer.
Purpose Position
Preventive and Corrective Electrical Maintenance
- Perform scheduled preventive and corrective maintenance on solar PV systems, pumps, motors, controllers, switchgear, and electrical distribution systems across the water systems.
- Inspect, maintain, and repair electrical systems supporting water supply and sanitation infrastructure.
- Ensure proper wiring, grounding, and electrical protection of equipment.
- Maintain and update maintenance schedules and technical guidelines for solar-powered pumping infrastructure.
Solar System Optimization and Troubleshooting
- Diagnose electrical and solar PV system faults using appropriate testing and diagnostic equipment.
- Repair or replace defective electrical and solar components to minimize downtime and maintain portfolio functionality targets.
- Optimize solar pumping system performance and energy efficiency using Remote Monitoring Unit (RMU) performance data.
- Support integration and calibration of RMUs to ensure accurate performance data transmission.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance activities.
Water Supply Systems Support
- Support the operation and maintenance of borehole pumps, submersible pumps, booster pumps, and water treatment equipment.
- Monitor electrical and energy performance of solar pumping systems to optimize efficiency and reduce operational costs.
- Support rehabilitation and upgrade of existing electrical installations and equipment.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow electrical safety procedures and lockout/tagout (LOTO) practices.
- Ensure compliance with national electrical codes, environmental regulations, and organizational policies.
- Conduct routine safety inspections of solar and electrical installations and report hazards.
- Promote safe working practices within WASH facilities and among Circuit Riders/community operators.
Field Coordination and Technical Support
- Provide technical support and mentoring to Circuit Riders/Area Pump Minders on first-line electrical fault detection.
- Support escalation and resolution of complex electrical and solar faults reported through the Circuit Rider network.
- Coordinate spare parts and materials logistics for electrical maintenance activities.
Monitoring and Reporting
- Maintain maintenance logs, inspection reports, and equipment service records within the centralized asset management platform.
- Report equipment failures, maintenance needs, and spare parts requirements.
- Assist in preparing maintenance schedules, work plans, and quarterly performance reports.
Qualification, Skill and Experience
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- A minimum of three (03) to five (05) years of relevant experience in electrical maintenance, preferably with solar-powered water pumping systems.
- Proven experience in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of solar PV systems, pumps, controllers, and electrical distribution systems, preferably in the WASH sector.
- Experience working with water supply systems, boreholes, solar-powered pumping stations, or water treatment facilities is highly desirable.
- Experience with Remote Monitoring Unit (RMU) systems or similar remote/telemetry monitoring platforms is an advantage.
- Experience with I-NGOs or donor-funded rural water operation and maintenance (O&M) programmes is a definite advantage.
- A paid-up member of Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ).

- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills, particularly for solar PV and pumping system diagnostics.
