The Simalaha Community Conservancy (SCC) is a joint initiative by the Sesheke and Sekute Chiefdoms and the Department of National Parks with the technical and funding support of the Peace Parks Foundation. The SCC is pioneering a model of development led by the communities, based on the sound management and conservation of their natural resources. It includes a fisheries programme looking at the establishment of community-based, sustainable management systems for riverine/floodplain fisheries in Simalaha.

The role of the Fisheries Coordinator is to implement this programme. The Fisheries Coordinator will be appointed by the Simalaha Community Conservancy Steering Committee/ Board of Trustees and will report to the Conservancy Manager.

Results that are to be achieved under this programme include:

• Coordinate development of fisheries management programmes in order to ensure sustainable fish resources utilization
• Establish effective communication channels (network platforms) between all stakeholders, local, national and transboundary.
• Build capacity in fisheries management, particularly at local community level
• Support improved aquatic habitat and fishery resulting from the establishment of a network of Fish Reserves and elimination of environmentally damaging fishing methods
• Advocate for harmonized fisheries regulation empowering local communities to manage their own fisheries resources.

Requirements:

• Degree in Fisheries/Biological Sciences, Natural Resource or Environmental Management with a proven track record in community-based natural resource management work or Social Sciences and with experience and/or knowledge of Fisheries
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in project administration, management and implementation
• Extensive experience in working with rural communities on institutional development work
• Experience in working with donors, other NGOs and government agencies
• An understanding of transboundary initiatives
• Excellent people, leadership and communication skills.
• An excellent command of the English language
• Knowledge of community/village/conservancy structures and organization experience with working with communities in rural parts of the Zambezi Region, Zambia
• Enthusiasm for fieldwork
• Specific experience in freshwater community fisheries and/or river basin issues would be an advantage
• Driver’s license.

Remuneration:

A competitive salary package will be negotiated, based on qualifications and experience.
