Mission and objectives The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Lusaka operates in Zambia as part of the UN system in the country under the Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO). UNIC Lusaka is part of 63 United Nations Information Centres (UNICs), UN Information Services (UNIS) and UN Offices (UNOs) that serve as the principal sources of information about the UN in host countries. They promote greater awareness and public understanding of and support for the aims and activities of the UN by disseminating information on the work of the organization. The centres provide media, non-governmental organizations, educational and research institutions, government officials, the diplomatic corporations, and the general public with relevant information about the activities of the United Nations, using different traditional as well as new media tools and platforms. The centres are key to the UN’s ability to reach the people which the organization serves around the world, and to share the UN story with them in their own languages. The information centres implement communications strategies on UN priority themes and carry out a wide range of activities, including educational programmes and media outreach activities including, organizing press conferences, seminars, report launches, exhibits, educational outreach, and campaigns. The information centres use a number of platforms, including websites and social media platforms. In addition, UNICs provide communications support and liaise with the media during visits of the UN Secretary-General and other senior United Nations officials. In Zambia, UNIC provides dedicated communication support to the UN Resident Coordinator and the UN Country Team (UNCT) while serving as secretariat of the UN Communication Group (UNCG) that supports joint communications to ensure coherent messaging from the UN, in support of the Delivering as One approach.
Context The current Zambia–UN Sustainable Development Partnership Framework runs from 2016-2022. This includes the development and implementation of a Communication Strategy to convey very simply and concretely what the UN development system will do to help Zambia achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The University Volunteer will be part of this exciting team. In view of the current COVID-19 situation in Zambia, the UN is as of February 2022 implementing a 20 percent staff presence in the office subject to review depending on how the disease evolves in the country.
