Based in Chipata

Position Purpose
In the next 18 months, we will be embarking on a bold growth trajectory including:
• Releasing exciting new varieties created by our Seed Breeding and R&D Team
• Launching a game-changing digital platform, linking across our supply chain
• Acquiring new land and doubling factory processing capacity
• Expanding further operations into Malawi

• Growing our leadership team and investing in talent development
• Reaching more than 20,000 farmers with ‘Seed + Service’ offering of training, market
• Access
• Reaching more than 250,000 farmers with quality seed
• Closing our Series B equity round

Duties and Responsibilities
As a Lead Data Analyst you will report to the Grower Services Manager and work closely with several teams across the Production Department and Management. This position is focused on gathering key business intelligence through primary field research and statistical data analysis to support the company’s operations and data-driven decision-making. The focus will be on analyzing the impact that proposed goods and services under R&D and practices already at scale have on the lives of our smallholder seed farmers and customers. This position will also test data capturing surveys and techniques that could be later scaled across operations. The ideal candidate will have a background in data analysis and statistics, research methods, and proven experience designing and implementing practical research tools. During the course of this position, the Lead Data Analyst will also be in charge of setting in place the monitoring and evaluation plan for a large Enterprise Challenge Fund Grant that the client has with the European Union and coaching the Data Analyst and Smallholder Database Manager who will be on your team.

Essential Requirements
• Bachelor’s Degree or above in Statistics, or Master’s Degree in which the use of statistical analysis and statistical software (SPSS, STATA or R) was necessary for published research
• Working competency with R statistics software or STATA (proof will be required). Competency with both is highly preferred.
• Proficiency in translating and explaining statistical outputs into recommendations and results useful to colleagues of diverse background (e.g. extension agents)
• Relevant management experience and an aptitude for good team coordination

Asset Requirements
• Highly analytical, pragmatic, and proactive personality
• Experience in monitoring and evaluation, and setting-up result-oriented monitoring frameworks
• Experienced with programming survey Apps such as ODK, Survey CTO, CSPro, Survey Solutions or other free data software in order to collect digital data
• Experience in data analysis in Excel, including statistical analysis and visualization
• Experience supervising rural enumerators and leading data teams
• Ability to deliver high-quality work under time-pressure
• Experience in mixed methods social scientific research
• Experience with geographical information systems is an asset (e.g. QGIS)
• Strong communication skills
• Familiarity with small-scale agriculture and rural settings

Core Responsibilities
• Work with Department Managers to define priority business data needs and questions
• Create an M&E framework for an active European Union Enterprise Challenge Fund Grant support a Data Analyst in implementing the framework
• Help the company refine our data to monitor progress towards our goal as a “full farm partner” for farmers and our mission of “moving smallholder farmers from poverty into the middle class”
• Understand how to advise management on the human resource effort and cost-benefit analysis for certain types of data capture
• Design sample surveys and research to explore questions that we do not capture in our core farmer tracking system, including the use of comparison groups
• Program surveys into data collection apps and train staff on research and enumeration
• Test data capture protocols for later scaling across our core operational system
• Use appropriate statistical tests to analyse trends and draw evidence-based conclusions about the company’s operations and social impact
• Clean and manage datasets and databases for future modeling
• Produce various reports with recommendations for management based on trends and conclusions
• Work closely with Smallholder Database Associate for introducing new surveys across systems
• Participate in the creation of an integrated system of digital tools across operations
• Help develop innovative products to support smallholder farmers such as geospatial analysis to provide site-specific recommendations for production
